Richmond June 6

 

The sky was bare of clouds. A perfect sunshiny day; and, we were joined by three other couples we have met at different times on the trip. Three of us were map readers while the others looked for finger posts that might indicate the way. Very rarely does the post say Coast to Coast rather Foot Path; so, you cautiously proceed. One of the best indicators is the path others have tread. The grass has been flattened and where there is mud the prints they leave. We have all been off course at one time or another. Today we had sunshine and 6 sets of eyes. We were spot on arriving in Richmond early afternoon. We are still in Yorkshire. We were told that the Lonely Planet said that Yorkshire is one of the three places in the world to visit. It is where the Tour de France will start in July.

Richmond is the largest city we will go through. The town has been a military center since the eleventh century . The castle in the center of the city has an interesting history. It was where they imprisoned conscientious objectors during WW1. It has fallen into disrepair now. We had our lunch in the oldest pub in the city called the Bishop Blaise. Following a substantial lunch and a pint weariness took over and we sought out or B&B called Willance House and it is the oldest house in Richmond built in the 1600's.
