Ulverston May 21

After breakfast at the Park Plaza Hotel, we crossed the street to the train station. Information helped us find the right platform for Ulverston. We had about a 2 hour trip on the Northern Rail to Lancaster. At Lancaster we had 10 minuets to cross the tracks to take the Transpiennes Express to Ulverston. After a 35 Minute ride, we hoisted our packs to our shoulders and walked up to our Bed and Breakfast at St. Mary Mount.

Who are my friends?

We introduced ourselves to Jerry Bobbett who showed us to our cleverly refurbished attic room where gladly left our packs.

Jerry recommended The Farmers Pub for sustenance. We enjoyed a delicious lunch of mushrooms in a spicy Indian sauce and stir fried vegetables over rice washed down with a pint each. The food was excellent.

Joan is always first

After lunch we decided to find the beginning of the Cumbria Way. It is a good idea to take a little walk after a scrumptious meal. We wanted to see what the Cumbria Way markings looked like. Of course we didn't bring the instructions. We found the shinny brand new initial 3 inch circular medallian without difficulty. We followed its lead. Maybe it was the beer at lunch. We walked and walked until we met two lovely women that told us we were way off the track. You can see by the pictures that what we missed was a crack in the wall that led to the fields we were to walk across. If only we had read the instructions. We did learn one important point. I will have to protect the directions from rain while reading them and checking them off. This will disallow the use of walking poles. Not markers but descriptive directions will make the walk much slower. I will be reading out load and Joan will be looking while the rain descends. We can't wait. Oh for the yellow arrows of the Caminos of Spain.
